Shah Rukh Khan may have delivered several blockbuster films in the last 26 years in Bollywood, but the actor has also rejected several films that have turned out to be blockbusters. He most recently revealed that the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Padmaavat, which starred Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor was first offered to him. It is also no secret for fans that SRK was offered Munna Bhai M.B.B.S first, before Sanjay Dutt was cast and Jolly LLB, before Arshad Warsi was cast as the lead.
However, there are also three blockbuster Aamir Khan films, which were offered to Shah Rukh Khan first, but after the Bollywood superstar rejected them, for whatever reason, Aamir took up the lead roles and the films went on to become big hits at the box-office. Can you guess which films we are talking about?
While we can’t think of any other actor playing Bhuvan than Aamir Khan, in Ashutosh Gowariker directorial, but most people don’t know that before directing SRK in Swades, Ashutosh had offered him the lead role in Lagaan. Though, Ashutosh’s first choice was Aamir, but he too had initially rejected it. After SRK also turned it down, the director gave it a second go with Aamir and convinced him to do the film. Well, the film went on to become a massive success, both critically and at the box-office and even got nominated at the Oscars.
Rang De Basanti
The Rakesh OmPrakash Mehra film, Rang De Basanti, was not only a huge hit, but has also gone on to become a cult classic. Unlike the other films SRK has rejected, in this one, Shah was not offered the lead role, rather, he was asked to play R Madhavan’s role in the film, which of course the superstar rejected.
Yes, Aamir Khan was not Rajkumar Hirani’s first choice to play Phunsukh Wangdu! It was Shah Rukh Khan, who the director was convinced is perfect for the role, but the badshah of Bollywood wasn’t convinced and the role went once again to Aamir. The film went on to become a huge blockbuster and SRK even admitted regretting his decision in an episode of Koffee With Karan.
In more recent times, Shah Rukh Khan has been in the news for rejecting yet another film. The Rakesh Sharma biopic tentatively titled Saare Jahan Se Acha, was first offered to Aamir, who rejected it and recommended SRK that he should do it. However, reports and rumours suggest that Shah Rukh too have left the project. Although, there has been no official confirmation, from either the studio or the star, about his exit.
